OUR PATRON SAINT

Thomas of Aquinas or Aquino; (Aquino, 1225 – Fossanova) was an Italian Dominican priest of the Catholic Church, and an immensely influential philosopher and theologian in the tradition of scholasticism, known as Doctor Angelicus, Doctor Communis, or Doctor Universalis. “Aquinas” is not a surname , but is a Latin adjective meaning “of Aquino”, his place of birth. He was the foremost classical proponent of natural theology, and the father of Thomism. His influence on Western thought is considerable, and much of modern philosophy was conceived as a reaction against, or as an agreement with his ideas, particularly in the areas of ethics, natural law and political theory.

The 28th of January is the feast of St. Thomas of Aquinas. His parents sent him to a good school. He was a brilliant student and studied very hard. However his classmates called him “Dumb Ox’’ because he spoke very little. What made him a Saint was that he was humble, peaceful, tolerant, respectful, honest and had deep faith in God. He wrote many hymns and prayers to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and the Eucharist.

Unfortunately on a sad note our Patron Saint passed away on the 7th of March in 1274. He was such a humble person to an extent that God rewarded him at his grave when stars fell from the sky this being the reason why we are called the Thomas Stars. Like St. Thomas we will reach for the sun and land amongst the stars!

ACHIEVEMENTS

As Thomas House we have achieved a lot. The girls have done and still do their best to make us proud. In 2009 our head girl was Langa Mpofu and our deputy head girl was Amanda Katsande. Both girls were in Thomas, this was an honour. We have participated in interhouse hockey, basketball, tennis and swimming. We have girls who have and still represent us in sports. In swimming we have the swimming captain, Ropafadzo Matuzula, Netsai Karikoga and Yemurai Shangwa who have gone to a lot of countries to represent Convent and Zimbabwe. All of them are in the Mashonalnd Team and two are in the Zimbabwe Team. Recently Mpiwa Gwindi made us proud in public speaking. She won the juniors trophy! We also strive to keep our flag high, as we try to follow in the footsteps of St Thomas, our patron saint. He was a quiet child but he accomplished even more. He was a shinning star! We have reached the sky in all we have done. The sky is the limit for a Thomas Star!!!
